In 1977 a group of friends and sailing enthusiasts from Lake Maggiore, in search of the purity and freedom that sailing offers, founded the Unione Velica Maccagno.
The stretch of water between Maccagno and Cannobio, our Canalone, soon proved to be the main factor behind the club’s success. In fact, in the morning the Tramontana blows, and in the afternoon the Inverna, gentle and steady until sunset, when it gives way to our local evening breeze, the Maccagnina.
These winds guarantee excellent sailing conditions for members and for organizing regattas of high technical quality. Over the years, the number of sailors joining Unione Velica Maccagno has steadily increased. Today, among our roughly 200 members, many regularly take part in national and international regattas, with active teams in the Classe A, Laser, Dinghy 12’, O’pen Skiff, ISO and Buzz classes.
The club has grown, but our dream has remained the same. In 2012 we moved to a new headquarters made available by the Municipality of Maccagno and fitted out to meet the club’s needs.
The new facility offers ground-floor space for equipment and changing rooms, while the upper floor houses the office, kitchen, and a large hall used for award ceremonies and our sailing courses.
Every year we organize both theoretical and practical sailing courses with FIV-certified instructors, training children, teenagers, and adults in beginner and competitive programs throughout the year. For young sailors who wish to begin a competitive path in the O’pen Bic, Bug, and Laser classes, we have created the “Ragavela” program.
Not far from the clubhouse there are two areas designated for boat storage, each with its own launch slipway. The club also has an area for long-term parking of road trailers, located not far from the headquarters.
Over the years we have organized European, Italian, Regional, and Club-level regattas; the total number now exceeds three hundred, with more than ten thousand participants overall.
